From Culture to Conversation - From Literature to Links between
Language and Interaction

Exploring culture and literature in the classroom enables learners of English to develop their use of language and move to a deeper understanding of ways of life in English-speaking countries. We will discuss how to provide learners with stimuli to get them talking, listening, thinking and collaborating by using examples from the authentic contexts within Headway Culture and Literature Companion. Preparing learners to interact, extending their vocabulary so they can say what they want, and setting up meaningful interaction will be focussed on in this workshop. We will explore how to use literary texts to develop learners’ language and to help them understand texts that at first look difficult but which, if approached through personal response, are very manageable. In addition, we will think about how to manage our classrooms in conversation courses and deal with classes and learners of different backgrounds, abilities and speed of learning. Examples will be taken from the Headway Culture and Literature Companion but the principles and activity types that we survey can be used with a range of materials.
