The afternoon's programme comprises two complementary workshops:

14:00-15:30: Teaching English to young learners – Playful and effective
In this workshop, Leonora will try to explain why she has been active for many years teaching young learners – aged 4-10 – to understand and communicate in English. The introduction will be followed by activities she uses to turn theory into practice. Using materials which she co-authored – Mopsy and Kooky – she’ll show how you can achieve success with groups at kindergarten or at school and discuss how the same ideas can be adapted for use with adult learners as well.

Leonora Fröhlich-Ward, B.A.

Born of Irish-Italian parents in England, studied French at Exeter University and in France. After moving to Munich taught English to all ages, including a lectureship at LMU  training students how to teach English at primary school. She’s also co-authored several books and an English programme for Bavarian TV.

Dana Jelinkova

A teacher and now also a CELTA tutor, she taught English to adults in Prague before moving to Munich. She is interested in ways to make lessons beneficial and fun for both the learners and the teacher.

Using minimal resources
Using the learners and ourselves as resources, plus minimal technological aids such as the board and paper, helps not only when you are asked to do a last-minute substitution. Materials-light lessons can be engaging and encourage more interaction and communication in nearly all types of lessons.

We will look at a few simple frameworks including round-robin activities, ways of working with vocabulary cards and ideas from task-based learning. Bringing your own teaching ideas would be greatly appreciated.
